Good evening, Salem.

If you find yourself hiking in the Willamette or Umpqua National Forests this month, be on the lookout for wooden ornaments.

Starting in mid-November, there will be 200 locally crafted ornaments scattered along each forest’s non-wilderness trails for hikers to find. Finding an ornament will give you the chance to win a prize of a two-day vacation in the Willamette Valley.

The ornament hunt and giveaway is organized by the Willamette Valley Visitors Association, which hosts an annual ornament hunt to encourage people to explore the region

Every ornament will have instructions on how to register online for the chance to win the vacation.

The ornaments are specifically in the following ranger districts:

Willamette National Forest: Detroit, Sweet Home, McKenzie River and Middle Fork

Umpqua National Forest: Cottage Grove

Shop local for the holidays

Salem Reporter is inviting locally-owned shops with interesting gifts for the holiday to help us spread the “shop local” spirit in Salem.

Here’s how our 2023 effort turned out: Shopping in Salem – where to go for unique local gifts this season

We will publish a guide to local retailers on Friday, Nov. 29. There is no cost for participation, but here’s what we need from your business:

  1. Name, address, hours, phone, website
  2. One gift item described + price – 3 sentences or so.
  3. If possible, a photo of the gift.
  4. Item should be in stock at your store
  5. Gift certificates – do you offer them?

To have your item included, send an email to [email protected] by noon Monday, Nov. 25.

So, Salem business owners, tell shoppers: What have you got?
