Good evening, Salem.

Schools may get a few extra years to comply with a state law requiring lighting upgrades, potentially saving large districts like Salem-Keizer millions.

A bill championed by Rep. Kevin Mannix, R-Salem, passed the Oregon House today with near-unanimous support. HB 2307 allows schools to wait until 2030 to phase out some kinds of fluorescent lights that lawmakers banned in 2023.

It now heads to the Oregon Senate for consideration.

Lighting upgrades would have cost Salem-Keizer schools at least $40 million, district leaders said.

“Schools will have five years to transition towards LED lighting in school buildings, giving them time and flexibility to plan and budget accordingly without taking critical resources away from the classroom,” Mannix said in a statement.

The delay in cost comes as many school districts are facing budget crises. School superintendents and the Oregon Education Association were among the bill's supporters.
