Good evening, Salem.

In November 2023, Matthew Newman, 15, was on a joyride with two friends in northeast Salem when bullets came flying through their truck, killing Newman.

The now 19-year-old gunman, Gage J. Clark Adkins, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to first-degree manslaughter and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon. As part of his plea deal, the Marion County District Attorney’s Office agreed to recommend that a judge sentence him to 17 years in prison.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 17.

After Matthew’s death, his mother described him as a sweet, thoughtful boy who overcame a difficult childhood, earned good grades, dedicated himself to sports and made many friends who cherished him.
