Good evening, Salem.

We spent a good portion of today diving into the storied history of the downtown Salem Macy's, which opened in 1955 as Meier & Frank.

Employees and the property owner confirmed the store's long-rumored closure. Our story below looks at the history of a downtown icon and what's ahead as new owners hope to bring in a mix of retail and entertainment options.

In our research, we looked through many newspaper articles about the fanfare that greeted a major store opening 70 years ago in Salem. Below is one historic photo - you'll find more in our article.

A Capital Journal article on Oct. 27, 1955, shows crowds flocking to the Meier & Frank store in downtown Salem on opening day.
