Good evening, Salem.

Federal workers are under a Thursday deadline to consider a buyout offer or face possible furlough, according to the White House.

Salem has a relatively small federal workforce, with about 450 people employed by the federal government, according to regional state economist Pat O'Connor.

Most of those, about 300 people, work for the U.S. Postal Service and aren't eligible for the buyout offer, though the agency is separately seeking early retirement buyouts for employees.

Other Salem-area federal employees include about 121 staffers at the Veterans Affairs clinic, and a handful of jobs in the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Bureau of Land Management.

If you're a federal employee in the Salem area, we'd like to hear your thoughts on the offer and the rapid restructuring of the federal workforce underway. We can keep your information confidential if needed. Reach out to Managing Editor Rachel Alexander at [email protected].
