Good evening, Salem.

A former Marion County judge who made headlines for refusing to marry gay couples is now working for the U.S. Department of Justice.

Vance Day, 64, will serve as senior counsel to the Office of the Deputy Attorney General of the United States, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported.

The Oregon Supreme Court suspended Day from the bench for three years in 2018 over his practice of instructing court staff to say he wasn't available to marry same-sex couples. He also faced criminal charges for allowing a felon under his supervision to own a firearm, OPB reported, though the case was tossed out.

Day at the time portrayed himself as someone persecuted for his conserative political and religious beliefs.

His federal appointment this week was cheered by local Republican groups, the Oregonian reported.
