Wells Fargo to close Salem office, laying off 221 workers
Good evening, Salem.
More than 200 local workers got a pink slip just before the holidays.
Wells Fargo notified the state that it intends to close its Salem office in late 2025 - one of the largest local layoffs in recent memory.
The company is staying mum about its reasons, but the news wasn't a surprise to local business executives, who said it likely reflect the bank's challenges in commercial real estate, especially in smaller cities.
With a long notice period and low unemployment locally, local leaders are optimistic the workers affected can find new jobs in Salem. Read more in our story below.
