More affordable housing, and a program for kids in crisis
Good evening, Salem.
Members of the Salem-Keizer School Board generally indicated Tuesday night that they'll support a resolution limiting schools from collecting or sharing immigration information with federal authorities.
School district leaders on Friday released a pledge to protect students from immigration enforcement action which included answers to questions school principals have been receiving.
The school board resolution itself is largely symbolic, as both longstanding district policy and state law already prohibit schools from collecting or sharing information about students' immigration status. But several speakers told the board the statement mattered to themselves or the families at their schools.
"This resolution is a beacon of hope for families like mine," said Yadira Juarez, interim director of the Salem-Keizer Coalition for Equality, and mother of a student. She said it "reaffirms Salem-Keizer Public Schools as a place of safety, respect and belonging for all students, staff and families regardless of all immigration status."
The board is expected to vote on the resolution in January. We'll have a more detailed recap of the school board meeting tomorrow.
