We're a month and a half away from the end of free downtown street parking in Salem.
It's the end of a decades-long era, but starting July 10, meters will be required in the downtown core.
Parking in city parkades will remain free. The move is intended to generate more revenue to support the downtown parking district, including security in parkades. City officials hope to end a current tax downtown businesses pay to support those services, with money from those parking making up the cost instead.
