Good morning, Salem.

At Salem Reporter, we don’t endorse political candidates or take stands on measures.

From our founding, we have not published opinion pieces because our readers make clear what they want from us.

And that is one thing: Reliable, accurate information.

Our duty is to give you the facts on issues and candidates. Acting on your behalf, we question candidates to probe their views on subjects that matter to the community. We share what they tell us so you can judge for yourself who to support or oppose.

Sometimes, political campaigns use quotes from news sources such as Salem Reporter as part of a mailer or a brochure. They don’t ask our permission and we don’t have to give it. Our work is public.

Yet, the choice to do so can lead to confusion.

That could be so with a mailer sent out by four candidates for the Salem-Keizer School Board. One side features our name and a quote from one of our articles. At quick glance, it might seem Salem Reporter favors these four candidates.

Let me be clear: We take no position. None.

We treasure our independence. We treasure the trust of our readers. We will squander none of it picking sides in political campaigns.

What Salem Reporter does allow is political advertising. That is a business function of ours. The news team has nothing to do with such advertising – no say in who advertisers, where ads appear.

If you ever have any question or doubt about our reporting on political matters, I invite you to reach out to Managing Editor Rachel Alexander ([email protected]) or me ([email protected]). Our duty is to you – not any political party, candidate or ideology.
