The city has started mailing information out about the app, called Beep Beep Salem. It will allow Paid on-street parking will begin July 1, and the app will also allow people to pay for parking at existing meters at the airport and around the state Capitol.

Downtown parking in parkades will remain free. Money from paid parking will fund improved garage security and parking space maintenance, and is intended to free up space for visitors to downtown by ensuring employees who work all day aren't taking up spaces.

City officials also intend to phase out a business tax downtown businesses currently pay to maintain free parking spaces.

Information about the transition is at beepbeepsalem.com. We'll keep you posted as plans become more clear.
