City crews will close Southeast Caplinger Road starting today for two weeks as work begins on a road improvement project. The road is located on the east edge of Salem about a mile from Houck Middle School.
The road will only be open to local traffic. A city map of the detour is below.
The road work includes upgrading sidewalks, curb ramps, street lights and adding a pedestrian crossing with accessible ramps on Southeast Macleay Road.
"The goal of the project is to improve sidewalk connectivity and safety for pedestrians and schoolchildren who use these roads to reach Mary Eyre Elementary School, Miller Elementary School and other community destinations," the city said in a news release.
