Good morning, Salem.

An effort to dig up pieces of Salem's early history will be open to the public on Friday, June 13.

The site on the Willamette University campus once housed the Oregon Indian Mission Manual Training School. That's an early residential school Methodist missionaries built to school Indigenous Chemeketa children in European agriculture and other methods.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., people can visit the site, see the work happening and look at artifacts uncovered. Archaeologists from the city of Salem, university and other partners are seeking to find the original footprints of the buildings and better document an early period of contact between Indigenous people and European settlers in the Willamette Valley.

The site is located east of Smullin Hall on the university campus at 900 State St,

The city, local tribes, Willamette University, Willamette Heritage Center and other partners have been working on related projects over multiple years, including with digs at the Willamette Heritage Center during previous summers. Salem Reporter covered last year's findings here.
