Good morning, Salem.

It seems the entire north half of downtown Salem is under development these days.

Managing Editor Rachel Alexander recently walked through the long-vacant former JC Penney building, which a local group plans to transform into a space for entertainment and shopping. Her report is below.

It's the same team behind The Forge, which sits across the street and is open now with renovations still underway.

Improvements are also being made inside the former Macy's building, owned by a separate local group of investors. Those plans are under wraps for now, but we'll keep you posted as leases are signed.

Our news team will be off for Independence Day, so our usual newsletter will resume Monday morning. If any major news happens over the weekend, we'll keep you informed.

Here's some of today's news. Catch our latest reporting anytime on our website.
