Good morning, Salem.

Habitat for Humanity of the Mid-Willamette Valley is inviting Salem residents to help pay tribute to former President Jimmy Carter, who died on Dec. 30 at age 100. He spent decades helping build homes with the international organization.

The Salem ReStore at 1249 13th St. S.E. invites the public to come sign a framed wall and door in honor of Carter. The memorial will be available to sign until Jan. 11 during business hours, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

Carter visited the Salem area after his presidency. He and First Lady Roslyn Carter were potentially the first dignitaries to stay at Mahonia Hall, wrote Rebekah Willhite in a column for Salem Reporter last year.

“Governor Neil Goldschmidt, the first governor to live in the residence, said the Carters might stay with him following President Carter’s speech at Linfield University on April 6, 1988, according to an article in the Statesman Journal. Carter’s visit and speech, 'A Personal Assessment of the Possibilities for Peace in the Middle East,' was part of the Gordon G. Frazee Lectureship series,” Willhite wrote.
