Good morning, Salem.

President-Elect Donald Trump is preparing to take office in January, and among the first changes he's promised is a massive deportation effort.

Earlier this month, we reported on how the Salem-Keizer School District will handle potential immigration enforcement. Schools have policies in place not to allow immigration authorities to enter without a court order.

Reporter Ardeshir Tabrizian checked in with Salem police and other local law enforcement agencies, who largely reiterated that state law prevents them with assisting in immigration enforcement. He breaks down what state law and local policy require in our story below.

Managing Editor Rachel Alexander wrote this note about how we intend to monitor the local impacts of shifting federal policies as Trump begins his second term. If you have questions or specific issues you'd like us to delve into, let her know by emailing [email protected].
