Good morning, Salem.

Planned marches at the Oregon State Capitol this week will bring increased traffic and in one case, street closures to downtown Salem.

On Thursday, May 1, Oregon's farmworker union, PCUN, is holding its annual May Day march and rally focused on workers' immigrant rights. Salem police said closures from 1-2:30 p.m. would include portions of streets around the Capitol Mall, including Northeast Center, Chemeketa, Court, State, Cottage, Capitol, Church, Waverly and 12th streets. The event runs from 12-5 p.m.

And on Saturday, May 3, a local activist group is organizing a Hands Off Education rally from noon to 3 p.m. "From overcrowded classrooms to underpaid staff and outdated materials, our public education system is being stripped down year after year—and our students are paying the price," an event description says. No planned street closures are listed.
