Good morning, Salem.

A public safety activist and familiar face will speak on Thursday, May 1, in Keizer about what it takes for a community to reduce and prevent deadly violence.

Ben McBride is the CEO and co-founder of the Oakland-based consulting firm Empower Initiative. He has advised Salem-area leaders over the last year on what they are calling the Community Violence Reduction Initiative, a collective effort by law enforcement, community organizations and service providers to address violence in the city.

McBride’s presentation, scheduled from 8-9:30 a.m., is titled, “The Heart of Safety.” The free event will be held by Community Business and Education Leaders, a collaboration started in 2019 to address family and educational needs within the Salem-Keizer School District.

“Join us as he presents on the true foundation of safety – and how lasting change begins when we amplify the voices of those with lived experience, build trust, and create spaces where every person feels they matter,” according to an event flier.

People can attend in person at the REC by Valor Mentoring, 3500 River Rd. N., or virtually by Zoom. More information is available online, and you can register here for the event.
