The now 19-year-old who shot and killed 15-year-old Matthew Newman in northeast Salem in November 2023 was sentenced on Thursday to 17 years in prison.
The case highlights what Salem-area law enforcement officials have described as increasing involvement of young men and gang members in deadly violence.
Gage Clark Adkins, 17 at the time, had been released from custody on juvenile parole just 11 weeks before he killed Newman, a theme Marion County prosecutors said is increasingly common in Marion County.
