What to do in Salem from Oct. 9-15: Roller derby, cultural celebrations, and local haunts

Here’s a roundup for the week from Thursday, Oct. 2, to Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Men’s roller derby world championship
Friday, Oct. 10 – Sunday, Oct. 12: The Men’s Roller Derby Association world championships are rolling into Salem Friday and through the weekend, featuring 11 teams from four countries. The championships are hosted by a local co-ed league Concussion Roller Derby, and held in the Oregon State Fairgrounds Pavilion, at 2330 17th St N.E. There will be 15 games spread over three days, starting at 11 a.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, until 7 p.m. each day. Tickets are $20 for Friday, $30 for Saturday and $35 for Sunday, or $65 for all three days.
Indigenous Peoples Day celebration
*Monday, Oct. 13: Community members are invited to dinner, along with vendors and speakers, to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day near the Capitol Building. The event is put on by Indigenous Now, and held at the State Capitol Mall Park at 900 Court St. N.E. from 1-6 p.m.
Hispanic Heritage celebration
*Saturday, Oct. 11: A community event celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, observed Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, will be held at the Capitol Mall, 900 Court St. N.E. on Saturday. The event will include activities and performances from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Acts will include dance groups like Azúcar Cuban Dance y Mas, Casa de la Cultura Tlanese and Corazón Oaxaqueño, as well as musicians.
Rocky Horror at the Grand
Saturday, Oct. 11: Salem’s Historic Grand Theatre will premiere two screenings of cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” with shadow casts on Saturday night. The evening show will premiere at 7 p.m., and the midnight show will begin at 11:30 p.m., with doors opening an hour earlier. The theatre is located at 187 High St N.E. and tickets start at $10, with an added $3.50 fee for online purchases.
Scare at the Fair
Friday, Oct. 10 – Sunday, Nov. 2: The first ever Scare at the Fair is opening its doors at the Oregon State Fairgrounds on Friday. The haunt will continue through Nov. 2, featuring four themed haunted houses. It will run Friday through Sunday each weekend, except for Halloween weekend which begins earlier on Wednesday, Oct. 29. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. each evening. For access to the haunt, presale tickets start at $29.99, and can be purchased online with a $3.50 added fee, or on location. Entry is free for those who want to peruse the vendors. Carnival rides will be up and running, with individual tickets being $7 or $60 for 10.

Spooky Victorian home tour
*Friday, Oct. 10: Tour the Deepwood Museum Victorian home in candlelight on Friday, and meet historical spirits along the way telling stories of their past. A pop-up “Bootique” in the solarium will coincide with the tour. The museum is located at 1116 Mission St S.E., and the tour is $15 to attend, while the Bootique is free to visit.
