Keizer’s Big Toy to get facelift – but weather delays paint party

With wet weather expected through the weekend, city officials have postponed a paint party and makeover for the Keizer Rapids Big Toy Playground.

The event, marking the park’s 10th anniversary, had been set to begin Saturday, June 21, and the park was to be closed through June 24.

Officials said the event will be rescheduled but the new dates were not set as of Thursday. With the change, the park will remain open for use in the coming week.

The city had put out a call to volunteers to show up and help renovate the park, which was installed in 2015.

City Councilor Marlene Parsons, who led the installation of the park almost a decade ago, said renovations will include replacing signage, painting play structures, and repairing the playground’s fall surface.

Parsons said 25 volunteers would be needed to help paint, dismantle structures, and assist with cleanup.

When the park was installed, residents could pay to have their names engraved on the pickets surrounding the park. Still, 100 pickets remain empty, and the city is now selling name engravings for $50. Funds are allocated to the park’s maintenance.

Parsons said those interested in purchasing an engraving should call the city at 503-390-3700.
