Police arrest boy, 16, in pool hall stabbings that killed 1, injured another

A 16-year-old boy is accused of murder and attempted murder for stabbings that killed a young man and left another injured early Thursday morning.
Salem police arrested the suspect Thursday night, May 8, around 9:30 p.m., according to a statement from the Salem Police Department released Friday morning.
The boy is facing accusations of second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon in Marion County Juvenile Court.
Juvenile court records are generally confidential under state law, and Salem Reporter does not typically identify minors accused of crimes.
The stabbings happened during a fight involving a group of young men outside of The Cue Ball, a pool hall just east of downtown Salem located at 1262 State St, police said yesterday.
One of the victims, Isac S. Rizo, 21, of Salem, died at Salem Hospital after going to the emergency room for medical care, a police statement Thursday said. Salem police responded to the hospital around 1 a.m. after a report that two stabbing victims arrived “in immediate need of care,” the statement said.
The second victim, a 20-year-old man not named by police, received treatment for his non-life-threatening injuries.
Thursday’s statement provided few details about the stabbings, including what prompted the altercation or whether the two victims knew each other. Police spokeswoman Angela Hedrick said she could not share information about the fight due to the ongoing investigation.
The 16-year-old suspect was arrested outside of a northeast Salem residence and lodged at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center, Friday’s statement said.
