EDITOR’S NOTE: Salem Reporter launches new events calendar

We’re making it easier for you to find out what’s happening in Salem.

This week, Salem Reporter launched a new events calendar that lets you view and search for things happening around town.

We added this as another way to expand our service to Salem and help people connect and find things to do.

Our team knows that local events are one of the main things Salemites search for on social media and look for from news and cultural publications.

This summer we revamped our efforts to provide such information by manually creating lists every month and week of happenings around town. But as word has spread, we’ve found the process of keeping tabs on every happening a challenge for our small staff. Long text lists are also harder for our readers to navigate.

Salem Reporter’s new calendar automatically pulls in listings from some of Salem’s major venues, as well as local Facebook events. You as the reader can filter events by the date, search for specific keywords or browse by category.

And we’ve added the ability for people to submit local events HERE using a simple form. Just fill out a title and brief description, let us know if the event requires tickets, and optionally add an image and a link for people to learn more.

Our reporters this week are reaching out to local schools, theaters, performing arts groups and more to encourage them to add their events. We welcome entertainment and informational events of any type – meetings for civic groups, open mic nights, bar trivia, resource fairs and more.

We’ll continue to highlight upcoming Salem events in our news coverage, but we’ll do more curated listings highlighting our top picks. Our monthly listing of art and museum exhibits around Salem will continue. We’ll continue to preview major events like Art Fair, or round up thematic events like holiday lights displays.

Our tech wizards are still working to add some venues and iron out kinks. We’ll be asking for your reviews in a week and suggestions for improvements. Be ready to share.
