UPDATE: At around 3:30 p.m., Marion County Sheriff’s Office announced that South River Road is re-opened.
A semi truck is stuck under the South River Road railroad bridge between Salem and Independence, blocking traffic in both directions.
The crash is expected to close the road for at least several hours, and potentially all day, Sgt. Jeremy Schwab, a spokesman for Marion County Sheriff’s Office, said.
Schwab said the crash was called in around 7:30 a.m. Monday.
The truck is stuck on South River Road, at Orville Road, beneath a trestle bridge, blocking traffic from both directions. The intersection is located just east of Independence and is the primary road connecting south Salem to Monmouth and Independance.
South River Road is closed from South Halls Ferry Road to Orville Road, Schwab said. Traffic from both directions will be affected.
Crashes beneath that bridge on River Road happen several times a year, despite many clear signs warning drivers of the bridge’s height in advance, according to Schwab.
Employees from Marion County’s public works department are on scene working to clear the road, Schwab said.
