Salem Pops orchestra to start season with jazzy show this Sunday

The Salem Pops Western Oregon Orchestra will kick off its 2022-23 season with the first performance this Sunday.

This weekend’s show at Chemeketa Community College will bring jazz and motion picture scores to the stage. It will feature west coast jazz artist and director of jazz studies at Western Oregon University Adam Harris, according to a press release from the Pops.

The orchestra will be playing music from the film “Catch Me If You Can” for saxophone and orchestra and other jazz and pop favorites.

“Over the past several years, Harris has shared the stage with some of the world’s most famous jazz musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Dave Holland, Randy Brecker, and Joshua Redman,” according to the release.

Salem Pops is an orchestra composed entirely of volunteer musicians from Salem and other nearby communities who come together to play programs of jazz, classical and popular music.

The orchestra holds several shows a year. This year there will be four performances, including this weekend’s. The other show dates are Dec. 11, March 19, and May 21. The December show has already been announced as “A Very Merry Pops Christmas,” and people are able to purchase tickets now.

This weekend’s show will be held at Chemeketa Community College, at 4000 Lancaster Dr. NE in the Auditorium in Building 6 at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased ahead of time at salempopsorchestra.org.
