Marion Street Bridge construction wraps up a month early

Drivers heading to west Salem in the evening no longer have to worry about lengthy detours.

The Oregon Department of Transportation finished its project to repave the Marion Street Bridge on Oct. 6, a month ahead of schedule. The bridge is the sole westbound route over the Willamette River in Salem.

The project kicked off in late July, with work taking place between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Crews found there was less wear to repair than they’d expected, and dry weather helped speed the project’s completion, said David House, spokesman for ODOT.

He said using alternating detour routes, which changed depending on the progress of paving work, also helped the contractor finish more quickly.

The project was budgeted at $6.95 million. House said ODOT doesn’t yet have a final cost for the work.
