Teen boy arrested in northeast Salem shooting last week

Salem police arrested a 16-year-old boy Monday on charges alleging he shot another teen last week.

Around 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 27, Salem officers responded to the area of Northeast Marion and 13th Streets after multiple callers reported hearing gunfire, the Salem Police Department wrote in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

Detectives canvassed the area and gathered evidence, initially receiving no reports of injuries or damage. But several hours after the shooting, officers contacted a teen victim at Salem Hospital who had sought medical treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot injury, according to the department’s statement.

Police eventually arrested a teen boy on Monday and booked him into the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, conspiracy to commit second-degree assault and conspiracy to commit unlawful use of a weapon, police said.

The department said it does not identify minors involved in criminal investigations. Juvenile court records are generally confidential under state law.
